It was at this point that Melanie Holliday entered a convent and became Sister Mary Melanie. Melani (or Mattie, as she was called before entering the convent) was the only family member that Doc stayed in touch with when he went west, but the letters have been lost or destroyed. She is said to be the model for Mitchell&#039;s Melanie, though.</description>
